Havapoo Breed Guide

A Havanese – Poodle cross, also sold as the Poovanese – both names describe the same parent combination. Small, affectionate and silky-coated, with a strong attachment to its people and a real tendency toward separation anxiety.

Parent Breed Sizes

There is no recognized breed standard for the Havapoo (Havanese – Poodle), so adult size depends entirely on which parents were used. “Toy” and “mini” Havapoo are market descriptors for the Poodle parent, not recognized varieties. These are the American Kennel Club standards for each possible parent.

Havanese7–13 lbs8.5–11.5 in
Poodle – Toy4–6 lbsUnder 10 in
Poodle – Miniature10–15 lbs10–15 in

Ask a breeder for both parents’ measured adult weights and for adult photos of previous comparable litters. Those predict a puppy’s adult size far better than any breed label or generation term.

Health & Screening

Crossbreeding does not remove inherited disease risk. A Havapoo can inherit conditions from either parent, so ask for documented test results on both parents rather than a general assurance that a litter is “vet checked” or “DNA clear.” The American Kennel Club notes that DNA panels complement rather than replace orthopedic, eye and cardiac testing.

From the Havanese side

The Havanese Club of America identifies eye disease, patellar luxation, hip disease, cardiac concerns, hearing loss and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease among the conditions relevant to the breed, and lists annual CAER eye examination, hip evaluation and patella evaluation among its health-testing requirements, with BAER hearing testing encouraged. PetMD additionally flags dental disease, which is common in small breeds with crowded jaws.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and patellar luxation appear on both sides of this cross — they are raised by the Havanese parent club and by the Poodle protocol alike, so they warrant attention regardless of which parent a puppy favours.

From the Poodle side

The Poodle Club of America’s recommended health testing for Toy and Miniature Poodles includes a PRA-prcd DNA test, an annual eye examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist (CAER), and a patellar luxation evaluation. Miniature Poodles add a hip evaluation through OFA or PennHIP.

What to ask a breeder for

Request the named, searchable result for each parent — the registry number or the report itself, not a verbal assurance. Ask for the Havanese parent’s CAER eye, hip and patella results, and for the Poodle parent’s PRA-prcd DNA result and patella evaluation.

On lifespan: no population study of Havapoo longevity was located. Any range given for this cross is derived from its parent breeds, not measured in the cross itself.

Shedding and allergies

The Havapoo coat can be wavy or curly and varies even within a single litter. No dog is truly hypoallergenic. The American Kennel Club explains that allergens are carried in a dog’s saliva and dander as well as its coat, so a low-shedding coat reduces but does not eliminate exposure — and an individual person’s reaction cannot be predicted from a puppy’s curl or its generation label.

Care Essentials

Use the data above as a starting point when evaluating breeders and planning for life with a Havapoo. Temperament, activity needs, and grooming can vary with generation and breeding program.

  • Match daily exercise to the listed energy level; mental enrichment keeps smart doodles satisfied.
  • Follow grooming guidance for the coat and shedding notes to prevent mats and maintain skin health.
  • Discuss health screening with breeders and your veterinarian, focusing on issues common to both parent breeds.
  • Review climate care tips if you live in extreme temperatures or high humidity.
